GOTS to Monitor Organic Cotton from Space

With the help of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the artificial intelligence (AI) company Marple, the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) has started a “world-first” initiative to use remote satellite monitoring in organic cotton certification.

Jeffrey Thimm, the manager of the project at GOTS, told Ecotextile News that it would initially involve using multiple sources of data collected by satellite from cotton fields in India will “train” artificial intelligence (AI) to be able to tell whether a cotton field was organically grown or not.

The project, whose initial findings are anticipated by the end of the year, could then be used to create cutting-edge risk assessment technology for the certification of organic cotton and stop fraud at its source.
